Welcome to Voices - a channel from PBS Digital Studios dedicated to documenting our shared human journey, and helping us understand each other a little bit better. In a time where so much divides us, we want to explore what unites us. Our roots, our communities. The food we eat. The work we do, the people we love, and the traditions that make us who we are.

The Surprising History of Pride in the South
LGBTQ+ rights advocates in South Carolina wanted to start a movement, even when coming out meant risking their relationships, their jobs, and their personal safety. So activists like Harriet Hancock built safe spaces that Queer and Trans people could call their own. A simple picnic in the late 1980s started a fight for LGBTQ+ equality in South Carolina that continues today.

I LOVE NUZZLE SQUAD WOOOO
Gonna put my 2 cents. There’s a lot of hate on them due to misunderstanding. But nowadays. There’s a lot of hate to them because most furries don’t address very serious personal issues and there’s so many incidents. And the hellscape we call the furry side of the internet isn’t the most. Ideal thing for their reputation. It’s good to understand the basics and not hating furries for that. But not liking the community and its actions is completely ok
We are stronger when we accept, embrace, and learn from other cultures.
Anyone who attempted to warn others about the jab were heavily censored. It's to late now.
Orishas animal sacrifice blood drinking possession saints are not what true hoodoo practitioners participate in
Victimization while proving the existence of racism. I’m not mad at y’all. God bless y’all. However y’all are white in complexion or some of y’all and it seems to be a personal preference and issue. Btw I don’t blame y’all but hating us only makes it worse and we’re not helping either

Thank you, PBS, for improving our educations! I hope there is much more to come of this series.
Yes, Mrs. Hancock! Thank you for your work from a proud South Carolinian. 💛
The fight for equality must continue we can not take the few rights we have for granted Thanks for sharing and happy Pride ❤
I've not had a chance to go to an Indigenous restaurant yet, but I really want to. I purchased an indigenous spice blend from a company called _Les Épices du Guerrier_ (lit: "the warrior's spices") and they are phenomenal. Turns out this company works with an indigenous restaurant near the Québec city region. I want to go sometime.
More of indigenous content please, PBS!!! This show is awesome!
I like it, it's like citizen science for 20,000 years. Observational science is still science.
The arab spring thats when the US loved social media. Now they want to censor everything and they hate social media.
Where is her son now? Odd to make him so central to the story only to leave that out, unless I missed something.
Great information about some very inspiring people and a reminder of how vulnerable we still are.
This is so great! Thank you for making it!
God loves all people but he doesnt love sin

That grill should’ve been filled with veggies.. looking like pulled pork yourself is NOT A CUTE LOOK! Also, think about those innocent sentient beings you’re slaughtering, just so you can “be happy”
'Its about not being afraid to try' that sums up the indigenous effort through survival as theybgot to cope with different environmental elements
Truth. The Diana Foundation is the oldest LGBT+ organization in the southerly US, started in the 1930s.
As a (settler) teacher of future art teachers, who works to center contemporary Indigenous voices in his curriculum for a settler-majority population of future art teachers, this video series has been illuminating and essential - I hope you get to do more of these! Obviously the priority is the value these videos have for Indigenous viewers to see and be seen - but these videos also have a larger and potentially transformative impact for settlers who need to better recognize Indigenous peoples and cede (literal and figurative) space to them.

Seeing people stand up for the marginalised really fills my heart with warmth and joy. The world needs people like Harriet!
Kameelah is total wrong when she intimates that there is not a clean separation between hoodoo and the church. If it were so, wouldn’t the religion simply be claimed as one or the other? Granted the off the religion actions may be the same - shouting, speaking in tongues, praising God - but, the inspiration, source of the Devine, and practice of religions are so different. There is a difference.
"why are you still as involved as you are?" "because there is a need" bless this woman
11 years Satan exposed and has been in the so called church....
And few do the works of God!!
I live in Mississippi. I cannot even imagine how scary that must've been for her son. It's still scary, as others mentioned. But I'm glad to be able to say that my city has had a small but vibrant gay community for as long as I've lived here (mid-90s), and it's finally starting to grow, to get recognized and accepted by more of the old folks. I've got to go and find out how I can help them out with that.
Hoo Doo 🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🦚❤️🔥

I live by the scientific method. However…. I have a sense of how it was before. When people didn’t understand but they felt. They had/have a spiritual connection with the natural world that is just as valid as my science. I can deeply respect things that I didn’t grow up with.
Dyllon you made the right decision to live your life. There's a lot of people that won't take it the right way, but that doesn't mean they don't love you because they do. Always remember that you are loved, and that nothing can stop you from being who you are.
Fascism requires enemies both within and outside the nation. For the Nazis it was Jews within and communists outside. For MAGA it’s LGBTQ+ within and migrants outside. That’s just one of many parallels between MAGA and fascism.
Whope says "hi"
Terrance Howard has also engaged with the community and he ain't indigenous. At least I don't think he is. So my question to you is, are contributions from non native scientists welcome in indigenous sciences? If so, could I contributed my homunculus creation.
When the spanish came to the americas, they tried to destroy all previous knowledge. All the european colonists destroyed or took credit for Native knowledge. Diseases , genocide was used to wipe out non western european people.
I'm so sorry for all the hate here in the comments. I'm really tired of the way we teach history. Written history is not less biased, more true, or even harder to change over time than oral histories. I've really appreciated the chance to follow this series and expand my perspective and learn more. 😊
Yeah that's how real science works. Trial and error and shared knowledge. Unlike indigenous "science" it has evidence to justify the claims
